Synopsis

System Safety MIL-STD-882E is a one-day Continuing Professional Development (CPD) programme that introduces participants to the internationally recognised MIL-STD-882E System Safety Standard. The course provides a practical understanding of applying a systems engineering approach to identify hazards, assess risk, implement controls and manage safety throughout the system life cycle. Participants will learn the Eight-Element System Safety Process, hazard analysis, risk assessment methodologies and the management, analysis, evaluation and verification tasks required by the standard. Through practical discussions and real-world applications, the programme equips WSH professionals and engineers to make risk-informed decisions in safety-critical industries.

Programme Description

The programme adopts a practical, discussion-based learning approach where participants apply MIL-STD-882E principles to realistic workplace scenarios. Learners will establish system safety requirements, identify hazards, evaluate risks, develop and verify risk controls, document residual risks and integrate system safety throughout the lifecycle from concept, design and operation to maintenance and decommissioning. Emphasis is placed on improving organisational risk management, engineering reliability and safety performance.

Programme Objectives

  • Understand the purpose, scope and applicability of MIL-STD-882E.
  • Apply the Eight-Element System Safety Process to identify and manage hazards.
  • Conduct hazard identification and risk assessment using severity, probability and risk matrices.
  • Understand the 100-, 200-, 300- and 400-series management, analysis, evaluation and verification tasks.
  • Develop and evaluate effective risk control measures throughout the system life cycle.
  • Apply system safety principles to improve organisational risk management and support risk-informed decision making.
